Grasp AS is a private owned, digital Med-Tech company which is focusing on development, production and distribution of an innovative digital device within the healthcare industry.
The GRASP is used to register events over time. By squeezing it, patients can collect data on time of event, its intensity, and duration for the event. The device enables users to log experiences like pain, stress, fear, anxiety, sorrow, shortness og breath, pain, dizziness, hunger, withdrawal, but also happiness and motivation.
Innovative technology solutions like Grasp can deliver tangible improvements to important social outcomes, including the healthy extension of working lives, increased job retention and return to work, plus improved daily functioning.
The project assumed that the product would have feature such as registration events in real-time, obtaining qualitative data related to symptoms, automatic transfer of patient data to clinical practice and many more. Thanks to very low user threshold, anyone can benefit from the advantages of the device.
The user only needs to bring the Grasp with them and squeeze it as a response to their experiences. Better Software Norge team was responsible for providing software and UI, which enable visualization of uploaded data. This transparent interface will give future users an unique insight and understanding of tendencies and coherences between registered symptomps.
When we joined the project, work on Grasp’s development had already been going on for 3 years. The main challenge for BSS’s team consisted in creation front-end layer for both mobile and web application integrated with IoT device. Our job was also to design a unique user interface which enables simply and convenient navigating through the application.
In order to achieve the intended goal, BSS involved mobile and web developers (including back-end, front-end and full-stack), UX&UI designer and PM, who coordinated the entire project.
The Product Owner involved on the part of Grasp set the direction for product development which included consultation with physicians and collaboration with research institutions in Scandinavia.
Simultaneously Grasp have started research projects with aims of understanding how Grasp can be used to facilitate communication between therapist and patient in situations where verbal communication is challenging.
The biggest obstacle is the Grasp device, which doesn’t quite read and interpret the squeeze strength correctly. The calibration problem relates to the level of squeeze, which is different for children and adults. There is ongoing work to improve the hardware so that the displayed results are adequate with the patient’s actual condition.
We developed project concepts based on the client’s basic requirements. The work was based on the collected data from the pilot programs, co-working with the research team and the units responsible for firmware and hardware.
As part of the MVP, we proposed a different way of grouping data, e.g. timelines, diagnostics, changing the concept of linking devices to organizations, and divided the database into microservices.
We created a web site for doctors in .NET technology and a mobile application for patients. The mobile version was previously developed in Kotlin and Swift, while now we are developing it in Flutter to provide solutions for Android and cover the market for devices based on this system.
The result of our work (the project is still ongoing) is a modern and responsive application with a user-friendly interface.
The application helps in better understanding and managing the users health conditions and pain associated to them, both physical and mental.
It analyzes the scale of motions (squeezes) collected through the device and presents the data in different aspects. With its use the treatments can be evaluated more deeply and certain habits and methods can be developed to better the comfort and lifestyle of individuals.
